A message to our community:

It is with great disappointment that we must announce that the Opera NEO 2020 Summer Festival and Workshop cannot take place as planned. This has been an incredibly difficult decision, which we have come to after extensive consultation with our Board of Directors, faculty, staff, young artists, and community stakeholders. As the situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and global health crisis continues to be fluid, we recognize that we cannot now, nor can we in a month or two, fully guarantee the health and safety of our community. Many of our artists and staff would be traveling to San Diego from all around the country and many from overseas, putting themselves, as well as our generous host families and patrons, at risk.

Therefore, canceling the festival’s public events is the only responsible course of action to protect our artists, faculty, staff, and community.

To help our artists weather this unprecedented crisis, we are launching the

Opera NEO Artist Relief Emergency Fund.

Please consider supporting our artists with a donation in this time of great need. Additionally, if you were planning to buy tickets for our performances, please consider making the cost of your tickets as a tax-deductible donation to the the Fund.

While the cancelation of the festival’s public events is deeply disappointing, we do have some exciting plans in the works for this summer! We are creating an online production of The Magic Flute. This pioneering production directed by David Radamés Toro and conducted by Peter Kozmawill feature Opera NEO's talented young artists, all performing from their own homes. The virtual project will not only bring the joy of Mozart’s music into the homes of the San Diego community, but also will offer much-needed artistic fulfillment and a chance for collaboration to its young artists, orchestra members, visual designers, and production staff.

We will also hold workshop classes, seminars, and other activities online, free of charge for our young artists. You will hear more from us about these projects in the coming weeks!

Lastly, I wish you good health, safety, and a measure of calm in these incredibly trying times. We look forward to welcoming you to a live Opera NEO performance as soon as we are able to put this crisis behind us.

With gratitude and well wishes,

Peter Kozma
